I was pleased to be able to support Diabetes UK’s most recent campaign to better support the mental health of those with diabetes.
Diabetes has significant emotional and psychological impacts, but it is very rarely spoken about with reference to mental health. Studies have shown that at least 40% of those living with diabetes experience mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and diabetes distress.
Those who have poor mental health and diabetes are more likely to lack the motivation to self-manage, which in turn leads to poorer physical health outcomes as well. It is a cyclical issue.
As someone who has family members and friends who suffer from diabetes, I recognise the importance of raising the profile of this campaign and encouraging those who are worried about their mental health to speak out.
